Aims and Objectives

The Ad-hoc.com project’s overall objectives are:

  • To encourage and support linguistic diversity throughout the Union, by motivating and aiding individuals to learn the language of the country of their destination through the development of an innovative user-friendly language learning tool, which serves the specific needs of travellers (tourists, students, professionals) through WAP and GPRS technologies.

  • To support the "life-long learning", the guiding principle for the second phase of SOCRATES programme, by giving evidence that language learning could be an entertaining activity that could happen any time in any place.

  • To improve and validate broadband access to ICT learning at home or in geographically remote regions, with seamless access to educational content. The new applications (WAP and GPRS) allow for fast transfer of data (text, sound, picture and video) through the mobile device (phone, palmtop) of the user.

  • To develop a pedagogical method of autonomous self-directing language learning that allows for a self-directed acquisition of language skills and meets users individual communication needs regardless of the place and time.

  • To test and evaluate the application of the ad-hoc tool in various real environments to better understand and exploit the cross cultural effects in learning.

The project’s specific aims are:

  • To define the language content for the ad-hoc tool in the languages Greek, Italian, English and German

  • To present authentic communication and real life situations in the cultural context and to ensure its ad-hoc availability on travel occasions.

  • To offer different, basic language levels, based on the survival level

  • To chose thematic fields for the acquisition of language skills serving requirements of specific situations and specific purposes (business travel, social contact, travelling of young people etc)

  • To chose for acquisition of only partial competencies, e.g. oral comprehension and expression.
